Most people have attended at least one
wedding in our lifetime, whether it was our own or someone close to us. While
the ceremony and reception unravel, we become puzzled with questions in our
head.
Where do we get these crazy or absurd
traditions? Why does a bride throw her bouquet of flowers or the groom must
retrieve his bride's garter belt?
Do we really know the history and truth
behind these traditions? How did we ever become accustomed to these traditions
at a wedding?
We sit there quietly, applauding the
entertainment and never questioning the true meaning behind these traditions.
Like most brides’ we are pressured to follow the expectations of society and
are usually critic when we do not follow these traditions.
As some brides are overwhelmed with
frustration and refused to participate in these bogus rituals, it important to
understand the history and purpose behind our traditions.
The Bride's Veil
The veil is seen as a symbol of modesty,
youth, innocence and purity. The purpose of the veil was to protect the bride
and her face; ward off evil.
The Wedding Bands
The wedding ring is seen as a symbol of
eternity and the open center represents a doorway into the future. The
tradition of wearing the wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand
originated in Egypt. It was believed that there was a vein from that
finger that ran directly to the heart; representing everlasting love.
The Bouquet Toss
The bride's bouquet is seen as a symbol of
prosperity; representing happiness, fertility and love. Centuries ago, brides
carried bouquets of aromatic fruit, garlic, herbs and blossom to ward off the
evil spirits. Originally guests would tear off a piece of the bride's dress for
good luck transformed into the bouquet toss to preserve the condition of the
dress.
The Garter Belt
The garter belt is seen as a symbol of
good luck and prosperity. The purpose was for groom to bring luck to their
marriage if he owned a piece of the dress. Just like the story of the
bouquet toss, the tradition changed to the garter belt.
The Wedding Dress
The white dress is seen as a symbol of
purity. Before the Victorian Era, royal brides wore vibrant and rich fabrics
whereas the common woman would wear a grey dress; most often was worn again at
church.
Bridesmaids
The purpose of bridesmaids is there to
support the bride during her stressful time of planning for her wedding. The
tradition of the bridal party was used to fool evil spirits that might be
lurking about.
